چکیده

79 Abstract: Experimental cages started with a mixture of flies at three different ratios (1:9, 5:5, 9:1) from populations having heterosomal and autosomal sex–determining mechanisms were cytogenetically examined over six generations at two different temperatures (25 °C and 35 °C). In general, there was an increase in the frequency of XX males in all competitive population cages. Abnormal testes and intersex appearance, frequent X chromosome aneuploidies and deviation from a 1:1 sex ratio were observed.

A cline in frequency of autosomal males is not associated with insecticide resistance in house fly (Diptera: Muscidae).

Geographic variation in the chromosomal location of the male sex determining factor (M) was studied in four house fly, Musca domestica L., populations from the eastern United States. We found a strong clinal trend (29 degrees 41' latitude in Florida to 44 degrees 2' in Maine) in which the percentage of standard XY(M) males increased with increasing latitude. In Florida, 100% of the males posses...

Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes Related to Resistance in Spinosad- and Neonicotinoid-Resistant Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) Strains

BACKGROUND The housefly is a global pest that has developed resistance to most insecticides applied against it. Resistance of the spinosad-resistant strain 791spin and the neonicotinoid-resistant 766b strain is believed to be due to metabolism. We investigate differentially expressed genes in these two resistant strains related to metabolism in comparison with an insecticide-susceptible referen...

Selective advantage for IIIM males over YM males in cage competition, mating competition, and pupal emergence in Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae).

In the house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), sex is usually determined by a dominant factor, M, located on the Y chromosome. However, there are autosomal male (A(M)) populations in which the M factor is located on one or more of the five autosomes (I-V), most commonly on the third chromosome. Herein we report the use of isogenic strains to determine the relative fitness of Y(M) ver...

Infectivity of housefly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) to different entomopathogenic fungi

The housefly Musca domestica is a worldwide insect pest that acts as a vector for many pathogenic diseases in both people and animals. The present study was conducted to evaluate the virulence of different local isolates of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Isaria fumosorosea on M. domestica using two bioassay techniques: (1) adult immersion and (2) a bait method applied to both la...

Molecular characterization of the key switch F provides a basis for understanding the rapid divergence of the sex-determining pathway in the housefly.

The housefly, Musca domestica, is an excellent model system to study the diversification of the pathway that specifies the sexual fate. A number of different mechanisms have been described in the housefly, which reflects in part the broad diversity of sex-determining strategies used in insects. In this study we present the molecular identification and characterization of F, which acts as the ma...
